Henry Martin (1826-1915),
who said he was born at Monticello on the day of Thomas Jefferson's death, worked in slavery and freedom at the University of Virginia, where he rang the bell in the Rotunda every day for more than half a century. His large stature and fine character made him a favorite among professors and students, who often wrote about him in University publications. Although he never had the benefits of an education himself, Henry Martin insisted that all of his children learn to read and write.
