Rev. Robert Hughes
(1824- )

Robert Hughes was born at Monticello in August 1824, the fifth son and tenth child of Wormley and Ursula Hughes. Robert's father, a grandson of Betty Hemings, had worked in Jefferson's nailery as a youth, and later worked as a household servant, a carter, and a gardener. Robert's mother was a granddaughter of Great George and Ursula, both among the most trusted members of the African-American slave community at Monticello.

Just two years old at the time of Jefferson's death, Robert Hughes was valued at seventy-five dollars as part of the inventory of Jefferson's estate.
