Editorial Apparatus

As embedded in the transcribed entries:

[co] [cx]   Denotes the beginning and ending points of a cross out.
[dco]   Jefferson occasionally crossed out several entries at the same time with a diagonal cross out.
[eo] [ex]   The beginning and ending points for what appears to be an erasure or rubbing out of an entry.
[illegible]   Text was not readable with any degree of reliability.
*   In the Great Library Catalogue transcriptions, this symbol indicates the presence of a check mark in the manuscript at this location.
[also listed as]   Indicates an additional listing of the same work in another place in the manuscript.

 

Location notes in each transcribed entry can be utilized to determine where each entry occurs in the original manuscript and how to find nearby entries.

Other markings found in the manuscripts:

\   In the Great Library, this mark indicated a post-1783 acquisition.
{ or }   Braces were added in left or right margins that indicated some grouping of works, sometimes it indicates works that were bound together, but listed separately in that manuscript. Location notes are provided on each entry to make it possible to determine what other works were included in such groupings.
do.   Occasionally used by Jefferson to repeat an author, portion of title, etc. from a preceding line. That "dittoed" material is supplied in square brackets [ ] in the transcription of subsequent lines.
tt   Appears after Arabic number(s), usually at or near the end of a transcription for an entry in the 1789 List, indicating the currency symbol for the "Livre Tournois."

 

Location notes on transcriptions:

The location notes indicate the place a listing is found in a manuscript. The format of these notes is different depending on the format of the manuscript. The chapter titles used in most of the location notes are Jefferson's chapter titles.
