What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a way of publishing files via the Internet that allows you to create a "subscription" to receive new files automatically. Typically these files are audio recordings that can be stored and played on computers or small digital music players, such as an iPod™ or a Sony VAIO Pocket™.

Monticello's Podcasts will be updated regularly and will fall into one or more of the categories below:

  • Jefferson's Words - readings of selections from Jefferson documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Notes on the State of Virginia.
  • Behind the Scenes - interviews and radio-style pieces on the work of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.
  • Bring It With You - short looks at various aspects of the Monticello Plantation that you can bring on your visit. (Please note use of portable electronic devices is not permitted inside the House).
  • Talks and Lectures - audio versions of various talks given at Monticello.
  • New! ICJS Podcasts - audio versions of talks given by Fellows and other special guests at Monticello's Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies.

To subscribe to Monticello Podcasts you will need to use a "podcatching" software, such as iPodder or iTunes. You can schedule these programs to check a specific "feed" file on the Monticello Web site (http://www.monticello.org/podcasts/monticello_podcast_feed.xml) for new material for downloading to your computer or digital audio player. Users of iTunes can find our feed file under "Travel" in the podcast directory or use the search to look for "Monticello Podcasts."
