1776 copy of Declaration of Independence on display today at Monticello

The only touring copy of the Declaration of Independence that dates to July 4, 1776, will be on view at the home of the document’s author on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The printed copy of the Declaration – a “broadside” sheet printed in Philadelphia only hours after Thomas Jefferson’s final draft was adopted by the Second Continental Congress – will be displayed at Monticello’s Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The viewing in the visitor center’s Theater will be open to the public free of charge.

Third annual Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello to be held this Saturday

The Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello – a celebration of local food, heritage plants, sustainable gardening, and the horticultural legacy of Thomas Jefferson – will take place Saturday, Sept. 12. Organized by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation and the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, the family-friendly festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Montalto, the mountain adjacent to Monticello that rises 400 feet above Jefferson’s historic home.

This Saturday and Sunday: Plantation Community Weekend

Mulberry Row, the “main street” of Thomas Jefferson’s plantation, will come to life on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, when Monticello holds a Plantation Community Weekend. From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days, artisans and other historical interpreters will demonstrate trades and skills practiced by enslaved and free workers at Monticello during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Aug. 8 concert to benefit Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello

Virginia singer-songwriters Devon Sproule and Adrienne Young will be the featured performers Saturday, Aug. 8, at a benefit concert for the Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Monticello’s Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center. It will be preceded by a local-food tasting and seed-saving demonstrations beginning at 6:30.

Sixty-six people from 35 different countries are to be sworn in as U.S. citizens at the home of Thomas Jefferson this Saturday, July 4. The 47th annual Monticello Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony also will feature remarks by U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello (D-5th District) and patriotic music by the Charlottesville Municipal Band. The 10 a.m. event on Monticello’s West Lawn is open to the public free of charge.

Family Friendly Tours are under way; hands-on activity center is open

Tours of Monticello with a child-friendly focus are being conducted daily, offering youngsters 6 to 11 the opportunity to handle replicas of objects from Thomas Jefferson’s era while they visit the rooms on the main floor of his historic house. Young visitors also can play 18th-century games and take part in other kid-friendly pursuits at the Mountaintop Hands-on Activity Center on the grounds.

Monticello will mark the Grand Opening of the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center on Wednesday, April 15, with a full day of activities. The centerpiece of the day will be an 11 a.m. event on Monticello’s West Lawn celebrating Thomas Jefferson’s lasting legacies that will feature remarks by award-winning authors and historians Annette Gordon-Reed and Michael Beschloss. The West Lawn event will be preceded at 9 a.m. by a family-friendly activity fair on the mountaintop and followed at 12:30 p.m. by the public opening of the new center. All of these events will be free and open to the public.

The 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s return to Monticello following his second term as president in 1809 will be commemorated at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 15, on Monticello’s West Lawn. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a portrayal of Jefferson by noted character interpreter Bill Barker and music by the Williamsburg Field Musick fife and drum corps.
