Monticello's new visitor center earns LEED Gold certification

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has been awarded LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center at Monticello.
The Monticello facility is the first visitor center at a World Heritage site in the United States and one of only five visitor centers in the country to earn LEED Gold certification.

Monticello's visitation total up 1.3% in 2008

Monticello in 2008 experienced its largest year-to-year visitation increase in more than a decade. The mountaintop home of Thomas Jefferson attracted 447,514 visitors during the calendar year, an increase of 5,775, or 1.3 percent, over the 2007 total.

Monticello has launched a new Web site that highlights the relevance of Thomas Jefferson’s ideas to contemporary issues. The new site, Jefferson Today (www.jeffersontoday.org), features brief commentaries by notable figures on how selected quotations from Jefferson are applicable to current events and offers users the opportunity to share their views.

The museum shop, exhibition of Jeffersonian objects, and theater space at the center, located just south of Interstate 64, were closed June 8 in connection with development of the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center at Monticello.
