The Site of The Vegetable Garden The 1,000-foot long garden terrace served as both a source of food and an experimental laboratory.  


On June 12, 1790, Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson was recovering from an attack of his "periodical headache." Two letters and a small parcel arrived at 57 Maiden Lane. After examining them, Jefferson left the house, joined the shopping throngs on Broadway, and returned home with two flower pots.
