Author of The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, for which she received a 2008 National Book Award, and winner of a 2010 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Former Fellow at Monticello's Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies and a member of its advisory board.
