Monticello’s Montalto 5K to feature “First Responder Challenge”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—The Montalto Challenge, a demanding 5K race to the summit of Thomas Jefferson’s “high mountain,” will be held tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, at 8:00 a.m.
Thomas Jefferson Parkway near the intersection of Route 20 and Route 53, onto the Saunders-Monticello Trail then up to the summit of Montalto, elevation 1,282 feet. The 3.1-mile course, which offers spectacular views of Monticello and the surrounding area, includes stretches of crushed gravel, boardwalk, and asphalt.
This year’s race will feature the “First Responder Challenge.” Two teams made up of local firefighters and police officers will race to the top of Montalto. The winning team will be determined by the average times of the top five finishers and will receive a trophy.
The first-place 5K finishers among men and women will receive a "King/Queen of the Mountain" Jefferson cup and a unique “King/Queen of the Mountain” shirt.
Awards will also be presented to the second and third place men and women, and to winners in each age group. All racers will receive a "Montalto Challenge" T-shirt.
Race-day registration opens at 6:30 am. Walk-up registrations will be $30. Registration closes at 7:45 a.m. Walkers will start promptly at 7:30 a.m. Runners will start promptly at 8:00 a.m. Additional information about the race is available at www.monticello.org/montalto5k
All proceeds from the race will go to support the maintenance of the Thomas Jefferson Parkway by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the nonprofit corporation that owns and operates Monticello.
