Snowden was originally part of the lands of Peter Jefferson, presumably named after Snowdon, the mountain in Wales near where the Jefferson family was said to have originated.[1] Located in Buckingham County, Virginia, the property borders the James River. The estate was inherited by Randolph Jefferson following his father’s death. The original house, built by Peter Jefferson, burned to the ground and another house was built in a different location on the property by Captain John Harris, the owner of the property at the time, around 1857. Other owners of Snowden following the Jefferson family include John Moon, who purchased the property in 1870, and Mrs. D. W. Hancock, who owned it in 1901.[2]
