Fellows Forum: Provincial Patriots: Belgians and the American Declaration of Independence, 1789-1790
Join ICJS Fellow Jane Judge, Ph.D. Candidate in American History, University of Edinburgh, for a talk on her research on Provincial Patriots: Belgians and the American Declaration of Independence, 1789-1790.
Beginning in 1787, the ten provinces that make up modern-day Belgium revolted against reforms being implemented by their sovereign Joseph II of Austria. In the summer of 1789 it became an armed revolution and independence was won in December that year. Judge examines how these Belgian revolutionaries in the eighteenth century used the American model to craft their own declarations of independence and what this can tell us about the "transatlantic" state of the revolutionary period.
