By the time of Thomas Jefferson’s birth in 1743, Indigenous peoples had been present in North America for thousands of years, over time developing rich and varied cultures with equally diverse governments, languages, and economies. Although the most far-reaching and devastating effects of European colonization preceded the American Revolution, policies enacted in the early American Republic had further ramifications for Indigenous people that can still be felt today. As part of National Native American Heritage Month, join us on Monday, November 28, at 1:00 p.m. ET for a live Q&A with Heather Bruegl, a citizen of the Oneida Nation and Historian and Indigenous Consultant. We’ll discuss how early American policies affected Indigenous people and how Indigenous people continue a tradition of civic engagement and activism in America.
