After many years of friendship, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe became neighbors when Monroe purchased the Highland property near Monticello in 1793. The two men shared many life experiences - they both studied at William & Mary, were governors of Virginia, and served as Presidents of the United States, the 3rd and 5th respectively.
