Col. Nicholas Lewis (1728 – 1808) and Mary Walker Lewis (1742-1824)

Nicholas Lewis, the second son of Robert Lewis of “Belvoir” and Jane Meriwether, was born in 1728. He married Mary Walker (1742-1824) in 1758, the eldest daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker and his Mildred Thornton, of “Castle Hill.” They lived on “The Farm”, just on the edge of Charlottesville, which Nicholas had inherited from his grandfather, Nicholas Meriwether II. The couple had twelve children

Nicholas was an officer with the Virginia Militia and served during the Revolutionary War. His wife Mary Walker was a splendid nurse who cared for both the wounded British and American soldiers in her home. Nicholas was an uncle to Meriwether Lewis and, along with William Douglas Meriwether, served as his guardian.
