Statement on the passing of George Herbert Walker Bush

Then-President George H. W. Bush at Monticello in 1989We at Monticello are saddened by yesterday’s passing of President George H. W. Bush. We had the pleasure of hosting a State Dinner at Monticello for President Bush, his cabinet, and the nation’s governors during the 1989 Education Summit, held at the University of Virginia. Like Thomas Jefferson, President Bush was a great champion of education; we were honored to be part of those historic events.

“His motto was, ‘use power to help people,’” said presidential historian and incoming Monticello Board of Trustees Chairman, Jon Meacham, this morning on the Today Show. “Now this may sound sentimental, it may sound nostalgic, but it has the virtue of being true. Bush’s substantive legacy is one of reaching out across what was a pretty wide aisle back in 1989 to 1993.” Meacham authored the best-selling biography of the president, Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush.

Our sincerest condolences go out to President Bush’s family and friends.
