Love-in-a-mist has been grown in gardens since the late sixteenth century. English herbalists such as John Gerard and John Parkinson knew double forms which seem to have disappeared today. Jefferson sowed a related species, Nutmeg flower (Nigella sativa), in an oval flower bed at Monticello on April 18, 1810.
