This unusual European mallow-like perennial with purplish-pink flowers was planted in an oval bed at Monticello on April 18, 1807. Later that year, however, Jefferson's granddaughter wrote to him that it and the "pinks Carnations Sweet Williams Yellow horned Poppy Ixia Jeffersonia everlasting Pea . . . Columbian Lilly Lobelia Lychnis double blossomed Poppy & Physalis failed, indeed none of the seeds which you got from Mr. McMahon came up."
