October Weekend Alternate Driving Directions

October weekends frequently experience very high volumes of traffic on the road most guests use to get to Monticello (the Thomas Jefferson Parkway/VA State Route 53 from Scottsville Road/VA State Route 20).  

Please see below for alternative routes to Monticello.

If you are headed West (from Richmond) on I-64 to Monticello you may wish to follow this alternate route:

From I-64

  • Take the Shadwell Exit / 250E 2.8 miles
  • Slight right toward N Milton Rd 125 ft
  • Turn right onto N Milton Rd 0.6 mi
  • Turn right onto Milton Rd 2.7 mi
  • Turn right onto VA-53/Thomas Jefferson Parkway W 1.2 mi
  • Turn left toward Monticello 0.1 mi
  • You will be crossing over VA-53/Thomas Jefferson Parkway via the stone bridge.
  • Continue straight to guest parking at Monticello’s David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center. 

 

If you are headed East (from Staunton/Charlottesville) on I-64 to Monticello may wish to follow this alternate route:
NOTE: This is also the route for those headed South from DC

From I-64

  • Take exit 121A to merge onto VA-20 S/Scottsville Rd toward Scottsville 0.6 mi
  • Continue straight onto VA-20 S 8.1 mi
  • Turn left onto Carters Mountain Rd 5.6 mi
  • Continue onto James Monroe Pkwy 2.6 mi
  • Turn left onto VA-53 W 1.5 mi
  • You will be crossing over VA-53/Thomas Jefferson Parkway via the stone bridge.
  • Continue straight to guest parking at Monticello’s David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center. 

 

If you are headed North on 29 to Monticello may wish to follow this alternate route:

Take 29N to I-64E

  • Take exit 121A to merge onto VA-20 S/Scottsville Rd toward Scottsville 0.6 mi
  • Continue straight onto VA-20 S 8.1 mi
  • Turn left onto Carters Mountain Rd 5.6 mi
  • Continue onto James Monroe Pkwy 2.6 mi
  • Turn left onto VA-53 W 1.5 mi
  • You will be crossing over VA-53/Thomas Jefferson Parkway via the stone bridge.
  • Continue straight to guest parking at Monticello’s David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center.
