Daffodils and Jonquils
Narcissus
Native to Southern Europe and North Africa, Daffodils and the smaller Jonquils of the genus Narcissus are among the oldest flowers under cultivation. A commonplace in Colonial gardens, they remain among the most popular garden plantings to the present day.
Jefferson noted "Narcissus" blooming on April 6, 1766, and again on March 17, 1782. Narcissus, which includes the Daffodil and its smaller relative, the Jonquil, is one of the most popular garden flowers. Its early arrival and its bright trumpet and crown make it an apt herald of spring.
In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
