This shrub to small tree is native from southern Europe to northern India but has naturalized in the Mediterranean. In his Garden Book Thomas Jefferson documented a row of pomegranates that were planted in the south slope of Monticello in 1769. This double-flowering variety does not bear fruit. Pomegranates prefer climates with long, hot dry summers. They are well suited to container growing.
