Widely naturalized in North America, this European native ornamental is inedible, despite its similarity to wild onion and garlic.

Often confused with wild garlic or onion, the Star of Bethlehem is a native of Europe that is widely naturalized in the United States. Unlike its edible look-alikes, the Star of Bethlehem is poisonous to small animals and even to cattle. However, its delicate white flowers, rhythmically clustered into its grass-like leaves, make it an attractive ornamental.

In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
