Stock

Matthiola incana

Native to southern Europe, Stock has long been cultivated as a garden flower.

This is likely the "Gilliflower" Jefferson found suitable for naturalizing in "the open ground on the west" in 1771, although the garden carnation was also called by this name. The Elizabethans called them "Stockgilliflowers" for their "stock" or stem and for their carnation, or gilliflower-like, fragrance.

In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
