About the Event

At a pivotal moment for the nation, this conversation will consider the role of journalism in sustaining a free society and the challenges facing the press in 2026 and beyond. 

The evening will feature a conversation between award-winning journalist Judy Woodruff and New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie, Monticello’s 2026-2027 Fritz and Claudine Kundrun Fellow. Drawing on Woodruff’s decades of reporting on American politics and public life, the discussion will examine the evolving media landscape, the meaning of press freedom today, and the responsibilities of journalism in a constitutional democracy.

Event Details

  • Location: The West Lawn on the Mountaintop
  • Arrive Early: Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. A shuttle bus will be provided to transport guests to the mountaintop.
  • Seating opens at 5:30pm and the program begins promptly at 6pm.
  • Complimentary parking is available at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center
  • The Monticello Shop will be open before and after the program - merchandise, snacks, and beverages will be available for purchase.

Judy Woodruff is a senior correspondent and the former anchor and managing editor of the PBS News Hour. She has covered politics and other news for five decades at NBC, CNN and PBS.

Jamelle Bouie is a columnist for the New York Times Opinion section.
