Thomas Jefferson was one of early America's most passionate advocates for wine and viticulture. In late 1773, he convinced Italian vintner Philip Mazzei to settle in Albemarle County, giving him a 193-acre tract of land to start his viticulture venture. Jefferson's vision was to establish American winemaking as a serious enterprise; more than 200 years later, that dream took root at Jefferson Vineyards.
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just ten minutes from Charlottesville, Jefferson Vineyards sits at the heart of Virginia wine country. The estate neighbors both Monticello, Jefferson's iconic mountaintop home, and Highland, the nearby estate of President James Monroe — making it a remarkable convergence of history and landscape. The vineyard's award-winning wines range from delicate and refreshing to elegant, full-bodied, and rich.
