Daylily

Hemerocallis fulva

Daylilies are tough perennials originating in Eurasia and were mass planted throughout North America, particularly in the Colonial Revival period, to the point where they are confused as a native species.

Daylilies are ubiquitous at Monticello and surrounding areas and are often mistaken as a native plant. They are originally from China and have been in cultivation for centuries for their elegant and showy flowers, which are also edible. Despite their success here, they are sterile, spreading vegetatively (instead of by seed) with bits of root traveling and taking hold.
