Maltese Cross
Lychnis chalcedonica
Native to Eurasia, Maltese Cross is among the early ornamentals brought to the American colonies and produces bright red clusters of flowers.
Maltese Cross was an early import to the American colonies, and was listed in Bernard McMahon's 1804 broadsheet as "Scarlet Lychnis." It was planted in one of the oval beds at Monticello in 1807.
In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
