Siberian Squill
Scilla siberica
Despite its name, Siberian Squill is native to the Caucasus. Brought to North America as an ornamental, it easily naturalizes and has escaped into the wild.
Although not associated with Jefferson, Squill is a welcome harbinger of spring at Monticello. Partial to shade, Squill is native to the Caucasus and so easily naturalizes it is often mistaken for a woodland native in North America where it has become invasive in some areas.
In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
