Spotted Aleppo Lettuce
Lactuca sativa cv.
This lettuce variety was among the popular in the 18th century, having been introduced from Syria to Europe and America . The flavor of this lettuce is improved by both blanching the inner leaves and by a light frost.
Long cultivated in Syria, Spotted Aleppo Lettuce is a romaine type sent from Aleppo, Syria, to Europe in the 18th century. By 1804, this old variety was being sold by Philadelphia seedsman Bernard McMahon. The leaves are speckled with a bright reddish-brown variegation that is highly ornamental.
