Tickseed Sunflower
Bidens aristosa
Tickseed Sunflower is named as its dark brown, flattened seeds resemble ticks. A North American native, its yellow flowers attract pollinators.
The bright-yellow flowering members of the aster family announce approaching autumn days. Bidens aristosa is a showy, self-seeding, North American annual wildflower with abundant, daisy-like flowers on slender stalks beginning in late summer. It’s unfortunate common name, Tickseed Sunflower, describes the appearance of its dark brown, flattened seeds. The robust, bushy plants can grow 4-5’ high and boast delicate, deeply-dissected foliage on green or reddish, multi-branched stems and the showy flowers are attractive to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
