English Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia
English Lavender is one of the best-known of the traditional aromatic herbs.
Jefferson listed lavender for planting in the Monticello kitchen garden in 1794. Valued for its small lavender flowers as well as for its fragrant gray leaves, it has been grown and used in Europe since at least the twelfth century. This drought tolerant, deer resistant shrub produces abundant flowers, attracting bees and butterflies.
In Bloom at Monticello is made possible by support from The Richard D. and Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation.
