Black History Month
Join us for an Archaeology open house celebrating Black History Month.
Celebrate Black History Month at Monticello's archaeology open house, featuring displays, exhibits, engaging activities for all ages, and walking tours exploring the archaeological history of the mountaintop.
Join archaeologists as we share what we have recently learned about the lives of enslaved people at Monticello as well as ongoing work by our Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery. Come on one of our Plantation Walking Tours (11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm) led by archaeologists to Site 30, an archaeological site that is revealing important information about enslaved agricultural laborers at Monticello as well as the precolonial activities of Indigenous communities. Walking tours will leave from the Bronze Plantation Model near the Café and follow a historic road that is fairly flat, with uneven terrain in some areas. Sturdy shoes and a water bottle are recommended. The walk is approximately one-mile and 90 minutes round trip.
This event is included with any ticketed tour admission. No reservations needed.
Area residents can enjoy this event free if you live in the following counties: Albemarle, Greene, Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna, Buckingham, Nelson, Augusta, Rockingham, and Madison.
