Rosa gallica ‘versicolor’
The oldest of the striped rose varieties, Rosa Mundi has been cultivated since Greek and Roman antiquity.
Rosa Mundi is a sport of the Apothecary Rose (Rosa gallica officinalis) and is probably the oldest and best known of the striped roses. It is a rose of great antiquity, originating in Europe and South West Asia. Many legends surround this rose; the most romantic is that it was named for 'Fair Rosamund', mistress of Henry II. Thomas Jefferson acquired 'Rosa Mundi' from the William Prince Nursery of Flushing, New York in 1791.
