
October is Virginia Archaeology Month - Come Celebrate with Us!
Join us as Monticello’s Archaeology Department hosts its annual open house, featuring displays, exhibits on recent discoveries in the field and the lab, engaging activities for all ages, and walking tours featuring the archaeological history of the mountaintop.
East Lawn Area
Archaeology staff members will be on hand to answer questions at active excavations and show guests our most recent discoveries.
West Lawn Area
Check out displays, exhibits, and activities on the West Lawn that highlight our ongoing work here at Monticello as well as current projects undertaken by the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery.
Walking Tour Details
Archaeologists will lead complimentary Mountaintop Archaeology Walking Tours throughout the day. This tour explores the long history of archaeology here and how this work continues to enhance our understanding of those who lived and labored on the mountaintop.
- Walking Tours will leave from the West Lawn at 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm.
- This walk will follow the paths around the Monticello house. Sturdy shoes and a water bottle are recommended.
Admission
- The pop-up exhibits and activities on the West Lawn as well as the Mountaintop Archaeology Walking Tour are included with any ticketed tour admission. No separate reservations needed.
- Area residents of Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, and Rockingham are eligible for our local discount. Please show a valid ID with your address to our Ticket Office Staff upon arrival.
