Scotch Briar Rose

Rosa pimpinellifolia

One of the earliest rose varieties introduced to North America, this native European species is noted for its plentiful prickles, reddish stems, and prolific flowers.

This European native is highly variable in nature and was cultivated there by 1600. It was introduced into American gardens before the eighteenth century. Scotch Briar Rose is of easy culture, producing an abundance of lovely flowers on arching branches. This rose may correspond to one Jefferson referred to as "Prim rose," a possible reference to the flower's resemblance to Primulas. Single yellow flowers produced abundantly on highly prickled, reddish stems. Shrubs grow to 4 feet high and spread by suckers.
