Jefferson Library

The Jefferson Library is Monticello's research hub - a modern, presidential-style library where scholars, students, and staff dig into Jefferson's letters, books and papers, and the wider world he lived in. Decades of work here have built one of the richest bodies of research and resources that exist on Jefferson and early America, shaping everything from our exhibits, tours and the myriad stories visitors encounter on the mountaintop and online.  

The Jefferson Library is open to public researchers by appointment only.

NEW! In 2026, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. We invite you to view our new exhibit, Great Birthdays of Our Republic: Commemorating the Declaration of Independence, which features material from our archives celebrating our nation's previous "great birthdays": 1826, 1876, 1926, and 1976. You can find it on display in the library lobby through 2026. To learn more about Monticello's initiatives for the nation's 250th birthday, check out our website.
