  • Park and explore the visitor center

    Parking is free, and the visitor center has exhibits designed for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out the Griffin Discovery Room and enjoy hands-on activities.

  • Take a Guided House Tour

    Take the shuttle bus to the historic mountaintop and  take one of our recommended tours:

    Family Friendly Tour: Offered on select days throughout the year, these special guided tours are designed for families with children ages 5 to 11.
    Highlights Tour: Explore the first floor of the house and hear stories about Jefferson, his family, and enslaved workers.

    Walk Mulberry Row

    Explore Mulberry Row to learn more about the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. 

  • Enjoy the gardens

    Allow little legs to stretch by exploring Monticello's restored flower gardens, vegetable garden, and surrounding grounds. Keep an eye out for butterflies, frogs by the pond, and birds in the fruit trees.

  • Farm Shop or Mountaintop Activity Center

    Open every day, the Farm Shop's menu includes drinks, pastries, pre-made sandwiches, and everyone's favorite -- ice cream.

    Open seasonally, the Mountaintop Activity Center lets kids write with a quill pen, crack a code with a wheel cipher, or explore mystery objects.

  • See Jefferson’s gravesite and return to visitor center

    Walk down the hill from Mulberry Row or catch the shuttle at East Walk to see Thomas Jefferson's gravesite. Both the shuttle and a walking trail continue to the visitor center.

  • Check out the Shop

    Round out your visit with a stop in our gift shop's children section for a memento, or grab a snack to enjoy on the drive home.
