The History Buff
A day for history lovers to take a deep dive into the life of Thomas Jefferson as both founder and plantation patriarch, and his dual legacy.
Parking is free, and the visitor center has exhibits to check out before you head up the mountain, including The Declaration of Independence Exhibit. Next, take a 5-minute shuttle ride up the mountain (the shuttle runs continuously).
Behind the Scenes: Journey through the first floor of Monticello, then head upstairs to explore the world of Jefferson's family, his visitors, and the enslaved people who served them.
Founding Friends, Founding Foes Tour: This guided tour reveals how Adams and Jefferson rose from ordinary lives to become the "tongue and pen" of the Revolution, bitterly partisan enemies, and reconciled in retirement.
Guests can meet Thomas Jefferson (as portrayed by veteran historical actor-interpreter Bill Barker) in person, most Tuesdays through Saturdays throughout the year. Bring your questions for this interactive experience.
Just below the terrace where you finish your tour is the Farm Shop, offering coffees, pastries, sandwiches, salads, ice cream, and snacks.
Walk to Mulberry Row to learn more about the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. Go at your own pace through reconstructed spaces, or join a guided Slavery at Monticello Tour.
Explore Monticello's restored flower gardens, vegetable garden, and surrounding grounds at your own pace or join a seasonal guided Gardens and Grounds Tour.
Walk down the hill from Mulberry Row or take the shuttle down the mountain to see Thomas Jefferson's gravesite. Jefferson designed his own obelisk and epitaph before passing away on July 4, 1826.
Round out your visit with a stop in our gift shop to pick up a memento of your visit, or relax in the book section with more than 250 titles -- and comfortable reading chairs.
