Montalto Challenge
The demanding, all-uphill course offers thrilling views of Monticello, Charlottesville, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. All proceeds go the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to support the preservation and maintenance of the Saunders-Monticello Trail.
Join us in 2013 for an exhilarating 5K race from the base of the Saunders-Monticello Trail to the top of Montalto!

LOGISTICS FOR RACERS AND SPECTATORS
Pre-Race Packet Pick Up:
This year we are excited to offer racers the option to pick up their bibs and race packets on Friday, May 4 between 4-7 pm at the Reservations Lobby of the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center. Please note that our gates will close promptly at 7 pm. Of course, racers can also pick up their bibs at the registration table on race day.
Directions to the Reservations Lobby:
Enter through Monticello’s main gates and turn right into the Visitor Center parking lot. Go through the traffic circle and make a left. The Reservations Lobby is on the lowest level of the Visitor Center, immediately to your left next to the handicapped parking area.
Check In and Arrival:
There is still room for more racers, so sign up now! On-line pre-registration is open until noon on Friday, May 4. Race-day, walk-up registrations will be $35 and will begin at 6:30 am on Saturday.
For Walkers:
Registration/check-in will close at 7:15 am. If you have already registered, please check-in upon arrival. Walkers will cross the starting line promptly at 7:30 am.
For Runners:
Registration/check-in will close at 7:50 am. If you have already registered, please check-in upon arrival. Runners will cross the starting line promptly at 8:00 am.
Parking and Transportation:
Special parking for the race will be at Secluded Farm. After you park, follow the signs to walk over to the trailhead of the Saunders-Monticello Trail. Shuttle buses will bring all racers and spectators back to Secluded Farm from the top of Montalto after the race.
Directions to Secluded Farm:
Heading from Charlottesville on Route 20-South, the driveway for Secluded Farm is the first left after passing the intersection with Route 53. On race day, the driveway will be clearly marked with signs. Please use caution when entering and exiting Secluded Farm’s driveway.
Spectators:
All spectators must park at Secluded Farm. Those spectators wishing to view the finish line should ride Monticello shuttle buses to the top of Montalto. The last spectator shuttle will leave at 7:40 am. Shuttle buses will bring all racers and spectators back to Secluded Farm from the top of Montalto after the race.
Rain plan:
The Montalto Challenge will be run rain or shine. Should severe weather be forecast, a decision on the race start will be made at 6:00 a.m. and posted shortly thereafter on the Monticello website and the Monticello Weather Delays phone line at 984-9822.
