A yellow flower typical of the tomato plant

Costoluto Genovese tomato is an old, Italian preserving tomato. Although an oddity in today's vegetable garden, this variety's heavily-lobed and convoluted shape reflects the character of early 19th-century tomatoes. Its stellar flavor is intense and acidic.

The culture of the ribbed and scalloped Purple Calabash Tomato dates to pre-Columbian Mexico. It is uniquely acidic, but with a rich and concentrated flavor.

The Cherokee Purple, sometimes called a black tomato, reputably originated from the Native Cherokee Indians before 1890.

The large, highly flavorful fruits of the Cherokee Purple Tomato are smooth with slightly ridged shoulders. Artwork by Tim O'Kane.
