Family Fun
A day designed for all ages—hands-on activities, outdoor play, and stories that bring Monticello’s history to life for kids and adults alike.
Parking is free, and the visitor center has exhibits to check out before you head up the mountain, including Thomas Jefferson's World film, the Griffin Discovery Room, Many Threads—One Story Orientation Timeline and more. Next, take a 5-minute shuttle ride up the mountain (the shuttle runs continuously).
Offered on select days throughout the year, these special guided tours are designed for families with children ages 5 to 11.
Guests can meet Thomas Jefferson (as portrayed by veteran historical actor-interpreter Bill Barker) in person, most Tuesdays through Saturdays throughout the year. Bring your questions for this interactive experience.
Open every day, the Farm Shop's menu includes drinks, pastries, pre-made sandwiches, and everyone's favorite -- ice cream.
Open seasonally, the Mountaintop Activity Center lets kids write with a quill pen, crack a code with a wheel cipher, or explore mystery objects.
Allow little legs to stretch by exploring Monticello's restored flower gardens, vegetable garden, and surrounding grounds. Keep an eye out for butterflies, frogs by the pond, and birds in the fruit trees.
When the shuttle comes back down the mountain, there's an optional stop to get off and see Thomas Jefferson's gravesite. He is buried with his wife, his two daughters, and Governor Thomas Mann Randolph, his son in-law.
Round out your visit with a stop in our gift shop's children section for a memento or grab a snack to enjoy on the drive home.
