This one-hour guided tour focuses on the experiences of women, both enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello.

Aerial shot of guided tour on the south pavilion

Step inside the South Pavilion and explore the perils of the American Revolution through the histories of Martha Wayles Jefferson and Ursula Granger. As you tour the main floor of the house, consider how Martha Randolph, Maria Eppes, and Harriet Hemings each navigated the very different circumstances of their lives as daughters of a president.

Stories will also include famous visitors to Monticello such as Dolley Madison and other well-known women like Sacagawea who shaped the early history of the United States. Finally, learn about the crucial role women played and continue to play in the preservation of Monticello.

Please note: These tours are not accessible and involve climbing stairs. These tours are also recommended for adults and children age 7 and older.
