Calling all young scholars: Home Educators' Day!
Home Educators' Day has been cancelled because of unsafe, wintry conditions.
Explore the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center including the film Thomas Jefferson’s World, and innovative exhibitions on architecture, the Monticello plantation, and the creation of the United States, and the hands-on Griffin Discovery Room. Then, take a special guided tour of Monticello, the house where Jefferson enjoyed his retirement years with his large extended family.

Say “Jefferson loved macaroni and cheese!” |
Visit Monticello's Mulberry Row to learn more about the lives of enslaved people who lived and worked at Monticello, and roll hoops and play games on the West Lawn, just as Jefferson’s grandchildren did 200 years ago. Stop by the interactive indoor and outdoor activity stations that will allow students to explore a variety of Jeffersonian topics.
Light meals and refreshments are available for purchase at the Monticello Café, and the Monticello Museum Shop provides shopping opportunities for books and other learning materials related to the exploration of the worlds of Thomas Jefferson.

Home Educators' Day is cancelled today due to inclement weather and Monticello will be closed for the day. Stay tuned for info about applying your Home Educators' Day tickets to Scouting Day on Saturday, March 16 and other refund policies. Stay safe out there!
To all young scholars planning to attend tomorrow’s Home Educators’ Day, please stay tuned for news of a site closing if weather is inclement. If the Charlottesville area gets snow instead of rain, Monticello will very likely close the site for safety reasons. We’ll post an announcement as soon as a decision is made. Cross your fingers for clear skies!
Please note that we are expecting some form of winter weather on Wednesday. Monticello remains committed to the safety of our visitors and staff and will continuously monitor conditions. If it is determined that our grounds are not safe, notice will be posted on our website www.monticello.org, our hotline 434.984.9800 (option 2 and then option 4), and many of the local Charlottesville television and radio stations.
If Monticello closes during the time you reserved your visit, you can request a refund or apply your Home Educators’ Day ticket to the upcoming “Scout Day” event on Saturday, March 16. Please contact our reservations office to prearrange these changes. If we do not hear from you 72 hours after your scheduled event, we will automatically refund the sale. Again, this is a precaution to anticipated winter weather, but we recommend you check our site before your visit.
If Monticello remains open and weather is wet but not inclement, planned outdoor activities will be modified for indoor experiences to the best of our ability. In the event of a closure and cancellation, we will explore rescheduling Home Educators’ Day for the fall of 2013. We will post an update to this message at noon on Tuesday, March 5 and are hoping for clear skies.
Many families bring children of all ages to Home Educators' Day. While most formal activities will be geared towards elementary and middle school students, the Griffin Discovery Room is a great place for young children to play and explore. Weather permitting, the gardens and Mountaintop Activity Center are also fun and engaging for little ones. Hope to see you on the mountain!
There is a forecast for possible snow storms on Wed. in and around Richmond. We have registered for the home educator's event on Wed., but I am wondering about your policy for snow. Will the facility remain open regardless of the weather? If we cannot go due to weather related concerns, is there a chance for rescheduling the event or a refund for our tickets?
We home-school my 8 and 5 year old, and also have a 3 year old, and 15 month old. We plan to bring them all to the home-school day and am wondering if other families do the same and if you think the younger two will still find it interesting.
Thanks for your question. If you’re interested in visiting the upstairs of the house, please reserve a separate “Behind the Scenes Tour” ticket for your visit. Standard house tours include all rooms on Monticello’s main floor and last about 40 minutes. The Home Educators’ Day “special house tours” will be tailored with students in mind and incorporate more hands-on opportunities than the typical house tour. See you on the mountain!

A note to Home Educator groups affected by last week's snowstorm: Monticello will gladly honor pre-purchased Home Educators' Day tickets at Scouting Day on Saturday, March 16. Please contact Reservations to transfer your ticket and house tour time. Information on that day's activities is at http://www.monticello.org/site/visit/events/scouting-day-2013
We are eager to reschedule this event, likely for fall 2013, and will announce that date as soon as it is confirmed.
