Monticello's sponsored speaker at the Virginia Festival of the Book, Susan Kern merges archaeology and social history at Thomas Jefferson's birthplace to recreate plantation life at Shadwell, exploring the family's legacies from their investments in settling Virginia, expanding slavery, and the education of children. Susan Kern teaches history at the College of William and Mary and is a former archaeologist for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello).
