Thomas Jefferson and General Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817) became very good friends during Kosciuszko’s return visit to the United in August 1797 to May1798. There are forty-one extant letters between them as proof of their mutual admiration. Jefferson wrote of Kosciuszko, "He is as pure a son of liberty as I have ever known."

Bartosz Dudek's research focuses upon Jefferson's relationship with his Polish friend, the ideas and values they shared, and the differences they were not able to overcome.
