This room, which has two alcoves for beds, was likely occupied by Jefferson's grandsons during his retirement, and reflects their interests and experiences growing up at Monticello. Jefferson took an active role in the education of his grandsons, teaching them surveying and ensuring they had access to college education. He believed the emerging generation of young men needed to be educated in order to protect the legacy of self-government handed down by the Revolutionary generation.
