Dame's Rocket was among the first European wild flowers brought to the colonies, and was especially valued for its sweet fragrance, which is strongest in the evening. Also known as Sweet Rocket, it was recorded as being grown by Lady Skipwith and the Bartrams in the late eighteenth century. The plant is perennial and grows best in part shade where the soil is rich and moist. Stalks are up to four feet high with deep lavender flowers.
