Meets at Jefferson’s Tufton Farm (map)
Saturday, October 17, 2015, 9:30 am - 11:30 am
Reservations: Required

This annual event, truly a unique opportunity to explore the essence of the apple, has been among our most popular programs. Supermarkets today provide only a limited sample of the thousands of apple varieties once available to 19th-century fruit lovers. Tom Burford (aka 'Professor Apple'), and Gabriele Rausse, Monticello's Director of Gardens and Grounds, will provide numerous apple varieties, each introduced with a discussion of their history and culture. Participants will taste, savor, and, most importantly, rate each apple in this two-and-a-half-hour program.

Apples of North America:
192 Exceptional Varities for
Gardeners, Growers, and Cooks

by Tom Burford

One of my all-time favorite events at Monticello. It's wonderful to get the incredible backstories of the development of these apple varieties from the truly passionate experts they bring in. I had no idea going in that it would be as interesting as it ended up being. Nor did I realize the real range of apple taste and texture there is to be found. I noticed the next tasting is on October 16, 2010.
