Experience Monticello illuminated at sunset this fall. Explore the mountaintop through dynamic color, light, and sound. Enjoy lights, live music, and family-friendly activities. Food as well as beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Music and kids' activities from 5:30 - 7:00. The light show starts at 7:30 p.m.

All tickets sold for Saturdays October 2, 9, 16, and 23 include admission to the Lights, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness program that evening. Monticello's operating hours are extended until 8:30pm on these days. Choose from one of the following ticket options:

Lights, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is included in admission to Monticello on Saturdays, October 2, 9, 16, and 23. Gardens and Grounds Pass and the Self-Guided Tour are available during the event (5:30pm - 8:30pm). If you purchase any tour ticket for tours earlier in the day, you can also attend the evening event. 

In case of rain, this program may need to be canceled. If Monticello cancels due to rain, tickets may be exchanged for another day.

Local food vendors will be on-site from 5:30pm - 8:30pm and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase through The Shop at Monticello during that time. A list of local vendors will be updated on this page each week.

Local digital projection mapping artist Jeff Dobrow interprets iconic ideas of the Declaration of Independence, taking viewers on a luminous, colorful journey through a visual exploration of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Unfolding in three acts, the projection moves through feelings of rigidity and constriction to disruption and expansion, and culminates in a celebration of playful, dancing light.

The Exhibit Galleries will be open and the introductory film, Thomas Jefferson's World, will continue through the extended evening hours.

  • Bring a picnic blanket to spread on the West Lawn for the evening. 
  • No outside chairs, coolers, or bags/containers larger than 11” X 15” X 6” (28 X 38 X 15 CM) will be permitted. 
  • Please leave dogs at home for this evening program.
