Virginia State Capitol, Richmond
Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Join us for a behind-the-scenes walking tour and private talk at the 1788 Virginia State Capitol. Mark Greenough, historian and tour supervisor at the State Capitol, will lead us through some of the oldest spaces of this stately building designed by Thomas Jefferson.

After our walking tour, Gary Sandling, Monticello’s vice president for visitor services and programs, will speak about Jefferson’s difficult tenure as governor of Virginia as he faced crises on the frontier, in recruitment and supply for the war effort, and defending the Commonwealth from imperial forces.  As a result of these experiences, Jefferson would endure severe criticism in his presidential bids of 1796 and 1800, which would later shape his thinking about executive power.

Thank you for supporting Monticello! $25 of each ticket is a tax-deductible gift to Monticello.
