Group policies: Reservations are required for all school group visits and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  A deposit is required to finalize confirmation. Student groups taking a self-guided house tour are required to have 1 chaperone for every 5 students.  This ratio allows us to break groups into sizes which are appropriate for physical distancing in our buildings and shuttle buses.  Face coverings are mandatory for each guest.

Monticello Self-Guided House Tour
Guests will be greeted outside by a guide who will introduce them to Monticello. They will then proceed inside for a self-guided tour of the house using their smartphone. Upon exiting the house, a guide will be available for further questions. The number of groups taken each day has been limited to help us maintain capacity limit restrictions.  Groups with fewer than 55 people are candidates to tour the first floor of the house in a self-guided format.  In order to do so you must have 1 chaperone for every 5 students.

Monticello Grounds-Only Field Trip
By utilizing text panels, reader rails, an app, and a scavenger hunt, guests enjoy self-guided exploration of the North and South Wings, Cellars, Mulberry Row, the all-weather passage, and the gardens.  Many smaller spaces, such as the Hemmings Cabin, Storehouse for Iron, Cook’s Room, etc. will be stanchioned off. Guests can peek inside and use their smartphones to read QR codes that will direct them to dynamic content about these spaces, including videos and interviews.  Groups with more than 55 people will be allowed to tour the grounds of Monticello.  Access to the first floor of the house is restricted to large groups at this time.

Monticello Virtual Field Trip
If you can't bring your class to Monticello, we'll bring it to you! A Monticello guide will lead you in real-time through the first floor of Thomas Jefferson’s mountaintop home.  For more information, please visit our Digital Classroom.

Please note: 2½- and 4-hour guided school programs will not be offered for the 2021 school year.  Please check back for updated program information.

Simplify your day and eat on the mountain!

Our new Monticello Farm Table café has debuted a box lunch menu designed especially for student groups! Order ahead of your scheduled visit and lunches will be ready for you when you arrive.
