Group policies: Reservations are required for all school group visits and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A deposit is required to finalize confirmation. Student groups taking a self-guided house tour are required to have 1 chaperone for every 24 students. Face coverings are mandatory for each guest while riding shuttles and inside buildings.
This new 45-minute guided experience includes first floor spaces in Thomas Jefferson’s home, the West Lawn, and the South Wing. You’ll learn about Jefferson and his vision for America, the realities of slavery on the Monticello plantation, and the mountaintop’s iconic architecture. The number of groups taken each day is limited so please be prepared to make your request early and include additional dates.
Monticello Self-Guided House Tour
Guests will be greeted outside by a guide who will introduce them to Monticello. They will then proceed inside for a self-guided tour of the house using their smartphone. Upon exiting the house, a guide will be available for further questions. The number of groups taken each day is limited so please be prepared to make your request early and include additional dates.
Monticello Grounds-Only Field Trip
By utilizing text panels, reader rails, an app, and a scavenger hunt, guests enjoy self-guided exploration of the North and South Wings, Cellars, Mulberry Row, the all-weather passage, and the gardens. Many smaller spaces, such as the Hemmings Cabin, Storehouse for Iron, Cook’s Room, etc. will be stanchioned off. Guests can peek inside and use their smartphones to read QR codes that will direct them to dynamic content about these spaces, including videos and interviews. Access to the first floor of the house is not included in this option.
